The Body Knows Before You Do

What your body can teach you about attraction, desire, intuition and connection.
Author: Maha Shakti Anna
We like to think we choose people with our minds...
We analyse conversations,
We notice their words, we check whether they tick the boxes.
We look at compatibility, values, lifestyle, attraction, timing, attachment styles…
And then our body quietly sits in the corner like:
“Are we going to discuss what I think about this?”
Because sometimes your body knows something long before your mind is ready to admit it.
You meet someone and your shoulders drop,
Your breathing becomes easier,
You feel curious, you feel more like yourself.
And sometimes it goes the other way.
Nothing is technically wrong. The person is charming. Attractive. Interesting, but...
... something inside you contracts.
Your jaw tightens,
Your stomach shifts,
You suddenly want to leave.
So which one should you trust?
The mind?
The body?
The butterflies?
The red flags?
The intuition?
Well… let's make this a little more interesting!
Our Body Is Constantly Listening
Our nervous system is taking in information all the time.
Facial expressions, voice tone, posture, proximity, touch, movement...
Interactions Pace!
Whether someone's words match their behaviour.
Much of this processing happens outside conscious awareness.
That's why you can sometimes say:
“I don't know what's wrong. I just don't feel comfortable.”
Your body may have registered something before your conscious mind has put it into words.
This doesn't mean the body is a magical lie detector.
It means your body is constantly gathering information andlearning to notice that information can become a powerful part of self-awareness.
Attraction Is More Complicated Than Chemistry
We love to call it chemistry.
That instant spark,
The butterflies,
The obsession,
The electricity... But, here's the uncomfortable question:
"Is every intense feeling attraction?"
Not necessarily.
Sometimes intensity comes from uncertainty.
Sometimes it comes from familiarity.
Sometimes it comes from anticipation.
Sometimes it comes from anxiety.
And sometimes, yes, it is simply desire.
The problem begins when we treat activation, as proof of compatibility.
Your heart racing doesn't automatically mean you've met your person.
It might mean you're excited,
It might mean you're nervous,
It might mean you're attracted,
Or it might mean your nervous system has just encountered something it recognises from an old pattern.
And those are very different experiences.
Familiarity Can Feel Like Desire
This is where things get fascinating.
Our nervous systems learn patterns.
If unpredictability was familiar in earlier relationships, predictable connection can initially feel strangely unfamiliar.
If you learned to associate attention with inconsistency, someone being consistently available might not create the same adrenaline rush.
You might even interpret calm as lack of chemistry.
And suddenly you're thinking:
“There's something missing.”
Maybe...
Or maybe your nervous system simply hasn't learned yet that peace can be exciting too.
This doesn't mean every calm relationship is healthy or every intense relationship is unhealthy, life isn't quite that tidy.
It means we need to become curious about our attraction rather than automatically believing every feeling it produces.
So… Is It Intuition?
This is one of my favourite questions.
Because intuition has become a very fashionable word.
We say:
“I just knew.”
“My body told me.”
“My intuition was screaming.”
Sometimes yes, absolutely yes!
But sometimes what we call intuition is our nervous system waving a very enthusiastic little red flag because something feels familiar, not necessarily because it is dangerous.
And sometimes anxiety can sound remarkably like intuition.
So instead of asking:
“Should I trust this feeling?”
Try asking:
“What is this feeling trying to tell me?”
That's a very different question and it creates space between sensation and reaction.
You don't have to ignore your body.
You don't have to obey it either.
You can listen, become curious, gather more information.
Then choose!
"That is embodiment."
Desire Lives in the Body
Desire isn't only a thought.
It's an experience.
It can show up as warmth, curiosity, expansion, movement...
A desire to come closer.
A feeling of aliveness.
Sometimes it's subtle.
Sometimes it's unmistakable.
And sometimes desire changes once we actually become present enough to feel it.
This is one of the gifts of Tantric practice.
Instead of immediately consuming an experience, we slow down enough to feel the experience itself.
What happens when you don't rush toward the object of your desire?
What happens when you breathe?
What happens when you allow sensation to move through your body without immediately needing to act?
You may discover that desire isn't simply:
“I want this person.”
It can become:
“I want to experience this feeling.”
And most of the time, those are not the same thing.
Try This: The Body's Yes, No & Maybe
Here's a simple practice you can use when you're uncertain about a person, situation or decision.
Sit somewhere quiet.
Take three slow breaths and bring a recent interaction or decision to mind.
Now notice your body.
Don't analyse it yet, simply observe.
When you imagine saying YES:
What happens?
Does your body softens? Expand? Move forward? Become warmer?
Or does something contract?
Now imagine saying NO.
Notice again.
What changes?
Perhaps there is relief. Perhaps resistance, perhaps sadness, perhaps nothing at all.
And then there's the most important option:
MAYBE.
Maybe is not indecision.
Maybe is information.
Maybe means:
“I don't have enough information yet.”
You don't need to force a yes or no simply because you're uncomfortable with uncertainty.
Sometimes the most embodied response is:
“Let me stay curious.”
The Body Isn't the Enemy of the Mind
Embodiment doesn't mean abandoning reason.
And intuition doesn't mean ignoring evidence.
Your body gives you information.
Your mind gives you information.
Your experiences give you information.
Your boundaries give you information.
The wisdom comes from allowing these different forms of intelligence to communicate.
Think of it as an internal conversation rather than a dictatorship.
Your body says:
“Something feels different.”
Your mind asks:
“What could explain that?”
Your awareness observes:
“Let's not rush.”
And then you choose.
That is very different from living on autopilot.
When We Become More Embodied, Our Choices Change
One of the most beautiful things about embodiment is that it can change the quality of the questions we ask.
Instead of:
“Do they want me?”
We begin asking:
“Do I actually want this?”
Instead of:
“Why aren't they choosing me?”
We ask:
“How do I feel when I'm with them?”
Instead of:
“How can I make this work?”
We ask:
“Does this relationship allow me to remain connected to myself?”
That shift is enormous.
Because attraction isn't only about who pulls you toward them.
It's also about whether you remain yourself while moving closer.
The Real Practice Is Listening
Your body will not always give you a neat answer.
Sometimes it will be contradictory, loud, quiet, sometimes it will get things wrong.
That's okay.
Embodiment isn't about developing supernatural body radar.
It's about developing a relationship with yourself deep enough that you notice what is happening inside you.
You notice the contraction, the excitement, the hesitation, the warmth, the discomfort, the desire... And instead of immediately suppressing it, rationalising it, or acting on it…
You listen.
Because awareness creates choice.
And choice creates freedom.
Final Reflection
Perhaps your body doesn't always know before you do.
Perhaps it simply notices before you do.
And maybe that's even more powerful.
Because the goal isn't to let your body make every decision for you.
The goal is to stop leaving your body out of the conversation.
Your mind can analyse.
Your heart can feel.
Your nervous system can sense.
Your body can speak.
And consciousness can listen.
That is where embodied wisdom begins.
Feeling the Call?
At Gaia Transformational, we explore the relationship between body, energy, desire, intimacy and consciousness through Somatic Bodywork practices.
Because transformation doesn't happen when we learn to control ourselves better.
It begins when we become curious enough to feel ourselves more deeply.
Your body has been part of every relationship you've ever had.
Maybe it's time to start listening to what it has been saying.
With Love To All Humans!
